The Phenomenal Leadership Story of Rosa Parks

0

Popularly known as the first lady of civil rights, Rosa Parks’ role in the history of civil rights, African American upliftment, and leadership are lessons that inspire people to this very day. In the current times, when we struggle to find ethical leaders across the globe, Rosa Parks’ story is a reminder that all that one needs is a little bit of courage to shine through.

Humble beginnings

Rosa Parks was born in Alabama in the year 1913. She was an African American and hence no stranger to racism and cultural bias that lingered in the society back then. Her father was a carpenter, and her mother was a teacher. Her great grandmothers were American slaves. She rose to fame when she denied passing on her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus.

The early twentieth century saw a rise in racial segregation in public places. Racist groups like the Klu Klux Klan were popular and powerful. There were no separate school buses for black students, and their education also did not receive enough funding. Rosa Parks herself was a victim of bullying by the white children in her neighborhood.

Her small act of defiance to get up from her seat caused a city-wide furor, which led the authorities to take long-lasting steps to establish equality. After the incident took place, the city of Montgomery was forced to pass a new law that abolished the segregation of white passengers and others on public transport like buses.

The incident and her act of leadership

Rosa Parks was aged 42 when a life-altering incident took place. She was on her way back home after the day’s work when a white gentleman asked her to give up her seat. This was a time when the city of Montgomery followed segregation laws that did not allow black or African American citizens to sit with white citizens.

Despite her humble background, Rosa Parks stood her ground and did not budge. She was also later arrested for not giving up her seat for the white man. She broke the law but started a dialogue for a better standard of living and equal rights for the African American community.

Rosa Parks’ incident was not just limited to her. It also led several other African Americans and blacks around the world to be a part of a more reformed and inclusive society. She single-handedly led a boycott movement against the Montgomery city bus service that cost the latter thousands of dollars.

Her professional achievements

Rosa Parks worked at many places and donned many hats. She worked as domestic help, medical aid, and more. She was married to Raymond Parks, a barber, who encouraged her to finish high school. Upon her husband’s insistence, she graduated from high school, an achievement that only 7% of black women could boast of at the time.

When the Montgomery bus incident took place, she was working as a seamstress in a department store. However, she was soon fired from the job because of her act of defiance. In 1943, after she gained recognition for her heroic act, she joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She worked as the secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the organization.

Rosa Parks never let the fear of being a minority get to her. She even received some death threats after she began the boycott movement, but nothing deterred her from changing her stance.

After the boycott, Rosa Parks and her husband left Montgomery and moved to Detroit in 1965. She spent the next 23 years as a receptionist and secretary to John Conyers. Conyers was an African American US representative. During this time, she also participated in various other social movements like Black Power. In addition to this, she worked for the support and betterment of black political prisoners in the United States.

She never held official leadership appointments, but that did not come in the way of leadership skills. Rosa Parks was born to lead, and she did that not in the capacity of someone running an office, but as an ordinary citizen, living life on their own terms and carving a new path for others to follow. Her resoluteness made her an iconic personality in the history of America. She proved that simple acts could lead to life-altering changes, not just for an individual but an entire community.

Retirement and old age

Rosa Parks wrote her own autobiography when she retired, which gives an insight into her life, values, and achievements. She also finally received the appreciation and admiration that she deserved in the form of awards and recognition. She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Spingarn Medal from NAACP, as well as the Congressional Gold Medal. The National Statuary Hall in Washington DC also has a Rosa Parks statue that was made posthumously to celebrate her life’s work.

She suffered from dementia in her old age and passed away at the age of 92 in 2005. She is the first woman and among the four people to have to ‘lie in honor’ in Capitol Rotunda. Her courage, leadership, and determination for a better life for herself and her community is a lesson for the world, holding weight to this very day.

Daniel Ek: The Story Behind the Swedish Entrepreneur Who Established Spotify

0

When Spotify launched a few years ago, it changed the way the world downloaded and listened to music. There was a time when piracy ruled over the internet, and most people listened to their music from free pirated sources, but little did we know that a young entrepreneur could change the face of music and the business world in a short duration of time. This is the story of Daniel Ek, a young and far-sighted entrepreneur from Sweden.

Growing up

Born and raised in Rågsved, Sweden, Daniel Ek studied engineering but soon dropped out to follow a career in information technology (IT). However, it was long before he entered college, that his focus had already been shifted to the things he loved the most. A young Daniel taught himself coding at the age of 13 all by himself. In fact, he started building websites for local enterprises as a child. He used to work in his school’s computer lab or his bedroom at the time.

He also had a good sense of money. Even as a child, Daniel charged between $100 and $200 to design a website’s home page. He was able to ride over the wave of change and make the most of the internet revolution of the 90s.

Daniel was so successful in his designing business that he soon outdid his father by the time he turned 16 years old. He was earning a lot more than his parents and also showed the potential to go places in life. Surprisingly, he once revealed that his parents had no idea of his earning capacity until they spotted some costly guitars, TVs, and video games in his room. Little did they expect that by the time he was 18 years old, he would already have 25 employees working for him with a monthly turnover of over $50,000.

Taking matters forward

Daniel Ek joined the KTH Royal Institute of Technology but dropped out just eight weeks after the commencement of the course. He wanted to concentrate on his IT career at the time. This led him to find his own marketing company called Advertigo. But Advertigo was never a long term plan for him. It was just a stepping stone for the young entrepreneur. He later sold the company for $1.25 million.

By the time Daniel Ek hit his early twenties, he had everything most people aspire for. VIP passes, a Ferrari, a hefty bank balance, and more. However, his mind was not at peace. The successful businessman struggled with depression and mental health issues at an early age. This led him to venture into other fields, like music. Daniel had always been a music buff and enjoyed playing the guitar, piano, harmonica, bass, and even drums.

This was when he met Martin Lorentzon, the co-founder of TradeDoubler, an affiliate marketing company.

Establishing Spotify

At the time when the two gentlemen met, they were both experiencing personal issues in their lives. This probably gave them the right push to combine their passion and technical know-how to form Spotify.

Back then, when the two gentlemen were working on the idea of launching Spotify, piracy ruled the internet. Songs across countries and languages could be easily downloaded for free. Despite the odds, Spotify was able to come out as a clear winner in the music space. Spotify combined music and technology and gave people access to all songs in one place. At a very affordable price, people could listen to music 24 x 7 and share their favorite playlists with friends and family.

It was in 2008 that Spotify signed a deal with record companies to launch the platform in Europe. Although the music industry did not seem to show a lot of interest in the platform at the time, its popularity among users and investors grew by leaps and bounds. The company has made many big deals with leading artists since then.

Other achievements

Having begun working at the age of 13, Daniel has donned many hats. His achievements are not limited to Spotify’s success. He was associated with many other big names in the market at different stages of his life. He worked with Tradera, a Nordic auction enterprise. He also served as the CEO of one of the most popular platforms on the internet, μ Torrent. However, he later quit the post when the company was sold to BitTorrent.

Daniel is the perfect example of a self-made billionaire. His success story provides hope to many budding entrepreneurs to dream big and go after their dreams. His career trajectory also points towards the importance of chasing one’s passions over money.

To sum it up

Daniel Ek’s current net worth is estimated to be close to $2.5 billion, as per a study conducted by Forbes. His company Spotify is believed to be used by over 150 million people worldwide. Almost half of these are premium subscribers. Daniel Ek has surely come a long way from being a kid operating out of his bedroom and high school computer lab to establishing the largest music streaming service in the world.

The Last Dance: Nobody Wants To Buy Jordan’s Chicago Mansion

0

ESPN’s 10-part docuseries, The Last Dance, which first aired April 19, will air the final two episodes on Sunday. The series focuses on the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls season – which was Jordan’s last year with the Bulls. With the NBA season currently postponed due to Covid-19, basketball fans need some entertainment, and thankfully, The Last Dance, aired at the right time.

While the docuseries is focusing on the Chicago Bulls featuring Jordan, the story of Jordan’s mansion not selling has mostly been ignored. Jordan has been trying to sell his former Chicago-area home since 2012. Maybe the estate should have been featured in the docuseries – a missed marketing opportunity.

Jordan’s compound was first listed in February 2012 for the steep price of $29 million. After failing twice to sell his estate at auction, in 2014 Jordan relisted his Highland Park, Illinois estate for $16 million. After failing to sell his estate for $16 million, Jordan briefly removed his estate from the market. The NBA superstar and apparel mogul placed his home back on the market for $14,855,000, significantly reduced from the $29,000,000 price tag.

Jordan’s secluded compound includes 56,000 square feet of living space, with 9 bedrooms, 15 full and 4 half bathrooms and, At $14.9 million, Jordan’s house is one of the five most expensive for sale around Chicago. He’s asking more than 20 times the average listing price in Highland Park, $700,000.

Business Structure and Tax Deductions

0

Various factors are worth considering when deciding on the best business structure. However, income tax is arguably one of the most important factors as it directly affects profitability, operations, and, thus, the viability of the business in question. The business structure you finally choose will have serious, long-lasting legal, and tax implications. This article highlights the tax implications of various incorporated and unincorporated business structures, stating the pros and cons of each.

Sole Proprietorship/Partnerships

Tax preparation for Sole traders is perhaps the easiest amongst the various business structures. Since the owner and the business are mostly a single entity, the business is not taxed separately; the business’ income is the owner’s income. This means that the owner’s total profit minus tax-deductible business expenses (net profit) is taxed at individual tax rates. It’s the owner’s responsibility to withhold and pay all income taxes, including estimated and self-employment taxes. The only major disadvantage is superannuation; the owner can only claim a tax deduction for super contributions as a self-employed person. The final consideration of capital gains tax is not a significant issue for a sole trader.

Furthermore, owners pay taxes on profits using their tax file number (TFN), and the tax rates applicable to sole proprietorships are the lowest of the different business structures. Fulfilling tax reporting requirements and calculating annual tax returns is made much simpler by maintaining separate personal and business accounts. The same tax benefits also apply to partnerships.

Limited Liability Companies

Since an LLC combines the benefits of both the partnership and corporation forms of business, for tax purposes, income from the LLC is taxed at individual tax rates (approximately 30% flat rate). Income from corporations is taxed twice (first at the corporate entity level and secondly upon distribution of shares), but the ‘limited liability’ aspect of LLCs enables tax savings for its members. LLCs with multiple partners hold the default tax-status of a partnership; each member (partner) of the LLC reports their distributive share of the LLC’s income/loss which is then reported on their individual income tax return. Furthermore, members of an LLC are considered self-employed and are required to pay the self-employment tax contributions towards Medicare and Social Security; the LLC’s entire net income is subject to this tax. Furthermore, an LLC has the option to choose whether it wants to be taxed as a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation (including S and C corporations).

‘S’ Corporations

This special type of corporation is created through an IRS tax election. It is legally considered to be a separate entity from its owners, thus limiting the financial liability for which the owners (shareholders) are responsible. Businesses with this structure can avoid double taxation (the combination of corporate taxation and shareholder tax). However, S Corporations offer restricted liability protection as they do not necessarily shield you from all litigations, the tort actions of an employee, for instance. Furthermore, S corps are not taxed equally in every state. S corps offer major tax savings for you and your business; only the wages of a shareholder who is also an employee is subject to employment tax. The remainder of the income is taxed at a lower rate (if at all) and is to be paid as a ‘distribution’.

‘C’ Corporations

C corporations are traditional corporations that are subject to double taxation, and their profits are taxed at the corporate tax rate. Their profits are taxed when earned (at approximately 34%) and once again when distributed to shareholders as dividends (approximately 20%). Other than the opportunity for shareholder-employees to avail tax-free fringe benefits, C corporations also provide the ability to accumulate earnings at a lower tax-cost for future expansion. This enables the corporation to deduct all medical payments to a fixed amount, while shareholders-employees can enjoy this benefit on a tax-free basis. Whereas the double taxation aspect and the inability of shareholders to deduct corporate losses are major drawbacks, the ability to reinvest profits back into the company at a lower corporate tax rate is a major advantage. It is for this reason that most people prefer to form an S corporation instead.

Unincorporated Businesses

An unincorporated business/association is an organization such as a sports club or voluntary group, established through a mutual agreement between a group of people who share a common profit-oriented interest. Unincorporated businesses do not need to be registered and do not require any setup costs. Technically, since it’s not a legal structure, it isn’t recognized by the law; individual members are personally responsible for business debts and any contractual obligations. However, certain unincorporated organizations such as associations, some members’ clubs, and societies may be liable for corporation tax. Other unincorporated businesses may also be liable for tax payment, including certain occupations of sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLCs, fiduciaries, estates, trusts, and associations.

The new design surfaced online when Abloh posted three pictures of the jet on Instagram. The sneak peek showed the aircraft covered in white clouds over a sky blue background. The design borrows from Drake’s “Nothing Was The Same” album cover art.

Drake’s $185 million Boeing 767 private jet – ‘Air Drake’ – which seats 30 people, was first introduced to the world last year when the Champagne Papi artist announced a partnership with Cargojet. The Canadian airliner reportedly gave Drake the plane to generate publicity.

Dynamiq Introduces It’s Stunning New 50m GTT 160,

0

The Dynamiq range of configurable superyachts is set to grow after the yard revealed the first details of its forthcoming GTT 160 project. Dynamiq Yachts is aiming to redefine the 160ft superyacht category with the unveiling of its all-new Dynamiq GTT 160.

The Monaco-based shipyard is offering the full-aluminum, 54.5-meter (162ft) superyacht for approximately $21.5m with a build time of 24 months, granting a new level of accessibility to ownership.

The GTT 160 is aimed at today’s active owners who want to experience different destinations or cross the Atlantic quickly and enjoy endless summers in the Med and Caribbean on a more manageable and economical size of yacht.

The Dynamiq GTT 160 has been designed with a focus on creating the perfect superyacht for the modern-day owner. Dynamiq believes that it is essential for modern superyachts to be cool looking, efficient, and focused on sport and well-being. The yacht offers the performance and accessibility of one far larger but in a more manageable and economical package.

“The idea was to create the most attractive proposal for a superyacht of just under 50 meters,” says Sergei Dobroserdov, Dynamiq founder and CEO. “There are so many 50-meter yachts below 500GT available, but they all look very similar with pretty much the same functionality.

“We asked ourselves ‘What can we bring to the market that makes more sense for our clients?’ The answer was to focus on modern owners’ priorities and leave the less important things aside. So we decided to design the GTT 160 with the accent on the key factors: well-being, efficiency, and price.

“In terms of naval architecture, we selected a slender hull with a long waterline that is much more efficient and comfortable than a short, wide one. So rather than maximizing the interior volume, we analyzed everything an owner wants or needs in terms of general arrangement and features. We then arrived at a concept that provides the motion comfort of a 55-meter yacht with a conventional flared bow.”

It offers luxurious accommodation for 12 guests in six cabins and crew quarters for up to eight staff. The master stateroom enjoys pride of place on the main deck forward and features two large fixed side balconies. The vast galley with breakfast bar is designed for use by both a professional chef or for cooking in the company of friends.

There is also a big focus on entertainment. The vast galley has a breakfast bar that can be used by both a professional chef or for cooking in the company of friends. There is also a cinema lounge, a bar area on the upper deck and a sundeck offering ample room for sunbathing.

The upper deck includes a cinema lounge with a 75-inch screen, as well as a bar area. The sun deck hosts a second helm position with breathtaking views and plenty of room for sunbathing. Unusually and a first for a superyacht, the main deck aft is devised as a massive beach club with a hot tub for 12 people and enclosed spa area with sauna, hammam and a convertible gymnasium with space for a massage table. These features are more typical of vessels twice her size. There is a helipad with a maximum take-off weight of 3.3 tons.

As well as looking the part, the Dynamiq GTT 160 also benefits from state-of-the-art onboard technology. Hydrodynamic specialist Van Oossanen Naval Architects designed the fast displacement hull that decreases drag and improves fuel efficiency.

The yacht can achieve a top speed of 17 knots. Transatlantic crossings are possible at 14 knots and the maximum range at an economical speed of 10 knots is 4,000 nautical miles. Those looking for more speed can upgrade to the S version, which will offer a more powerful pair of MAN V12-1800 engines for a top speed of 23 knots. An optional hybrid system with zero-emission electric mode can provide silent cruising at up to 8 knots.

To complete the package, the GTT 160 houses a 21-foot tender in the forward garage and is equipped with a touch-and-go helipad platform with a maximum take-off weight 3,000 kg (6,613 lbs).

The Dynamiq GTT 160 can be configured at bedynamiq.com with an almost endless amount of options.

Bugatti Opens New Paris Showroom

0

Created in partnership with Groupe Schumacher, an automotive dealership with a luxury division, the new Paris based Bugatti showroom is the first to feature Bugatti’s new corporate design and will offer a small piece of the Molsheim experience in the French capital. This new showroom marks a new return to Paris for Bugatti with the last corporate presence being there nearly 80 years ago.

Located at 181 Avenue Achille Peretti, Bugatti’s recently opened doors to its brand-new home in Paris in partnership with Groupe Schumacher. Bugatti’s new Paris showroom happens to be the first to feature the brand’s corporate design with interiors that are compelling, to say the least. Bugatti has drawn subtle inspiration between its home in Molsheim covered in trees and fallow deer, by creating a lounge area in the Paris showroom that extends into an idyllic garden.

Groupe Schumacher CEO, Edouard Schumacher stated, “We envisioned a place where, in absolute discretion and confidentiality, we would be able to welcome our clients and give them a tailored service. A place in Paris where time stops.”

In the 1920s, Bugatti founder Ettore set up the brand’s first showroom in the very same suburb as the new one today, however just on a different avenue. Neuilly-sur-Seine also happens to be the suburb in which Ettore spent his last days. As far as history goes, it is also interesting to note that Groupe Schumacher, Bugatti’s new showroom partner, started business in 1947, the same year Ettore passed away.

“It’s a real honor for us to have been chosen by Bugatti to represent this iconic brand. We are particularly happy to be the first dealership in the world that proposes the new Bugatti visual identity”, states Edouard Schumacher.
